These pestols are beyond utilitarian items, in fact, being that they have designed handles probably means that they were extremely important to the owner and held in high regard.

These go beyond the axium of form following function.

First, many items (or inventions) we use are based on neccesity...but as they are used in society, their form or decoration become more in vogue...and slowly change from being simply utilitarian to more decorative...

A spoon, for instance can be a simple ladle with a handle...and over time the spoon now comes in hundreds if not thousands, of designs...the function of which remains the same.

There is an axium in the design world that (either) form follows function or function follows form. So if a driving a car is a function, what form should it take? Or do we invent an item first then try to figure what its supposed to do?

In the case of the pestols, the use has been around in most primative and modern societies for thousands of years. Several of the examples evolved and became more decorative and were probably the pride and joy of the woman who owned them. In a primative native society, few items were personal so they held a certain importance.

Stefan, what would a pestle be without it's mortal?

Nice pestles.
