I think there are a bunch of people on this forum that will be interested in this test I just accidentally stumbled upon at the end of a rifle scope video. I've long thought that what we call bird points weren't really that, and the larger points that we sometimes call arrow heads, are to large to fit on an arrow, and are more likely atl atl points. Anyhow, this is a really interesting video, and surprised the daylights out of me.

I got the rifle scope video, so now I'll have to go back and see what I did wrong and try and gewt the proper video. Sorry about that.

OK, I think I got it.:

You're pretty much right, BosnMate. We call them 'bird points' but they were used for general hunting. The larger points are 'dart points' and some times knives. Don't believe me, go mount them on an arrow shaft, small point or large point, and try shooting them and see which one does better.

Thats right. Most arrowheads are knifes. Those small ones were also used in war fare when they went raiding and slaving. Great video. 40 lbs is the minimum draw weight here and usually for youth. Another great video. I want to find your video on deer sinew as my deer butcher is going to collect me a bunch so I can share it with you all.

That's some great info!!!

Neat to see the penetration. (That deer looked pretty darn fresh from the blood trickle after a couple of shots.)

Experimental archaeology isn't always pretty, but that video shows quite well what 40 years of collector books and journals haven't been able to get across to many collectors (bird points weren't for birds.)

Also, if you've tried to knap your own arrowheads and make your own arrows, the skill/time invested isn't so much in the point, it's in the arrow. A broken tip or missing tip that results in an arrow shaft that is still usable is a win every time.
