This thought has been lingering in my head for awhile. Time to share it & see what other people think. 200+ years ago when farmers were clearing/plowing their fields of rocks did they know about Meteors? I'm thinking a rock was a rock & tossed in the pile or along the property line(stone walls) I've tried a few with my detector but find a lot of barbed wire & tin cans. Anybody else thought of this theory?

Sure, why not. One found in Canoncito New Mexico on a farm in the late 1800's stood out only because of it's weight and color. It's the Glorieta fall. So maybe some were placed where the others stones were. Good idea me thinks.

Seems like they could be there...somewhere. Thanks for the info! I never heard of the Glorieta fall.

Folks have been hunting meteorites in old stone walls with metal detectors since the 1960's. Best of luck to you!

Thanks Terry!

I would scan rock walls if they are from clearing fields.

I have scanned walls of quartz in old gold mining towns and found high grade.

The only problem i had was removing the quartz rock with out damaging the stone walls.

I have two walls that intersect on my property. At one point somebody made a couple holes(roads) through them. Thinking loggers or maybe another land owner from over the years. I have access to some other walls on private land but there would be a certain amount of damage caused getting anything out. Especially if its on the bottom.

At least AKDhunter is in a good area for walls. I think there was a saying, especially back East, that "Good fences make good neighbors."

I was detecting the foundation of a 1670s garrison house.I knew it wasnt a meteorite, but a hot rock.Even if it was a meteorite there was no taking it home.It weighed at least 800 pounds:laughing9:

Dont even waste the time... As soon as metal detectors hit the market just about every cache, gun, and meteor that was lying in those stonewalls was found and is now someone else's. Unless you are very remote or in an odd area the chances of finding a meteor in a stone wall are slim. Don't let me discourage you though. It does happen! Just like people finding pine tree and birch tree shillings.. Just wouldn't count on it. Thats a once in a lifetime thing. If you walked everyday with your detector covering thousands of miles of stone walls through now overgrown thorns, you MAY find one..

Ill stick to gathering up your kids lunch money change!!
