I found this on a beach and originally thought it was the head of a linstock, but don't know now. It's end has been split and bent apart, maybe to hold something? 20201120_102237.webp20201120_102225.webp20201120_102253.webp

It's soaking in vinegar now, so hopefully it should be a little clearer.

Sewing machine treadle was my first thought, a lot things used decorative cast iron in that time period.

Rusty iron in vinegar... that is a new method to me...
Are you trying to completely dissolve it or what?

No, just white vinegar, it worked really well on a completely crusted spike.

If you want the rust to disappear, soak it in diluted muriatic acid...in a plastic bucket, and outdoors for sure.
Made those old rusty brake drums look like new (except for the pitting)
