Hey guys,

Found this point while walking along a river in Charleston, SC. Any help with the ID is greatly appreciated. The odd part is that the stone is slightly curved upward...?

If it is a Point, and I have my doubts to that fact, it could be a Morrow Mountain from what I see in the first pic. The other two pics make me think natural though.

Thanks for taking a shot Grim, the edges have definitely been worked on the upper surface so I doubt it's a geofact. Perhaps a scrapping tool rather than a point.

Looks like it's definitely been worked on the edges, but the curve is strange. Maybe it was a scraper, or a practice piece. Sent you a PM.

Probably a break in production. It does have that mountain morrow shape like Grim said.

I think it may be a old broke piece of some type ceramic pottery. Most of the glaze has chipped off. I don't think it has been worked just the way the stuff breaks sometimes.

Thanks for the input guys, the point is made of chert SCrocks so definitely not pottery. Gheenoe78 has recovered a few marrow mountains in the area so certainly a possibility. The break in production idea seems the most like culprit for the unfinished back.

Take it around to a few shows. If the top collectors from the area tell you anything that's not similar to what I described if you are ever in the Rock Hill area I'll buy you lunch. I have no doubt it's pottery. Picked the same stuff up at times over the years.

Yeah, I think you'll find that SCrocks is spot on here......

If it's chert then might have been a stone bowl shard. I don't see the typical Native American pottery characteristics such as the temper stones but it could possibly be a carved/flaked stone pottery or even something like a salt or alkaline glazed ceramic. It's real hard to tell sometimes unless it's in hand. I don't think it's a broken projectile point though but something else probably just as cool in it's own way. I would definitely take it to a specialist in the area to figure it out for sure if it was one of my finds.

I sure have not seen any pottery that looked like that! When you zoom in it is easy to see. It almost looks like a bluish black chert we have here. No fire pop so just probably blew apart on them. Ooops!
