Also there are no roads that lead to this area it is in the middle of a swamp.
I have found a few of these using my iPhone map app.
They are along an old railroad track bed... stripped of rails and ties, around 100 years ago.
I got to go metal detecting at one of the sites.
They were plots that had been harvested of hardwood, for cordwood to fuel the old steam engine trains.
The trees were replaced with faster growing pine trees.
Those century old pines are much taller than the deciduous trees that were left alone when the railroad stripped the beds.
Metal detecting yielded lots of old square nuts and bolts as well as metal plates that joined the rails end to end.
The youngest of our group was the first to find a square nut and he had no idea what it was!!
History is quickly slipping away!...
Among my metal finds, I spotted a green sparkle [emoji734]️ I knew what it was at the first glance. Unfortunately it was only a broken piece of a telegraph wire insulator. Still a cool find.
So, you may be near an old railroad bed.
Many tracks have been removed due to new paved roads, back in the day.
