Not always. Believe me. I just don't post the fails.

I've pounded a street and only squeaked out one coin or gone home with just rusty nails and aluminum screw-tops.

This particular tear-out had two hot-spots that produced all the coins (a digging buddy also took home about 7 coins). The tear out is three blocks long but all the coins came from two tight sections of torn-out sidewalk strips of about 20 feet each.

Here, the actual streets torn up don't seem to produce finds. But sidewalk tear outs, which in this case happen along side the street tear-out, sometimes do.

I do love me some sidewalk tear outs. At some point this season the city is installing NEW sidewalk through a half-mile of peoples front yards! Not the most choice part of town but I'm not gonna miss it!
