Found a 1833 INDIAN HEAD today. I was able to read most of the coin. When I got home I got the bright idea to clean it.This is where stupid comes in . I looked on Youtube how to clean, the girl said , mix 1/4 cup white vinegar and 1 tbs of salt.It ate the cooper almost smooth.I guess I have to find another formula to use to clean copper.:BangHead:

lol what were her results......:laughing7:

Her's came out looking like a new penny

Hi; One other problem. There were NO 1833 Indian Heads ever Minted. You need to double check thee date ok. Don't worry, We've all messed up at some point. Me, I'm a Pro at messing up. Welcome to the Club. PEACE:RONB

No worries We Have All Toasted A Coin Find Indian Head And Reds Peace dollar (it was A Fake)

Sorry that happened but thanks for the heads up on what not to do!

We've all messed up something.
I just rinsed my IH dried it and dropoed it in a small container of mineral oil. Mine was toasted anyhow.

Ya, vinegar & salt should be used on common clad, just to clean it enough for spending.

CLR works great on common pennies and again don't leave them in long. They come out shinny....usually.

Kinda like leaving in a bottle of coke for a while but then that goes poof!

Yea.. maybe someday I will...? :laughing7:

Don't know if you guys ever heard of the "tater treatment" ,,, But on a real trashed coin, stick it in a potato, leave it a few days, take it out, clean with water and tooth brush.

Really get the gunk off [Would not recommend for nickels, I tried it and it turned pumpkin orange].

if that's the worst mistake you make, in this hobby, you're light years ahead of me. I scarred more than one coin, or artifact, with my digging tool during my early days. Now go find one to replace it! :icon_thumleft:

Only clean coins with warm water, dish soap and a soft cloth.
