We called them Necker Knobs :) I just sold one on eBay a couple of months ago....

when I was a kid, they were common, but i think they were outlawed, maybe just for highway use.
I remember Dad saying they could break your wrist.
Maybe without power steering, hit a curb or rut....?
handy on a forklift.
 

I added one to my 1965 IH Scout.
