Sunday school feild

Hey everyone,
went out to a school Field on Sunday, did ok. It was nice to not find a ton of nails and garbage for a change. I found this, it looks to be a buckle but its so covered in dirt and grime I can't tell what it is. Any ideas how to get the layers of gunk off of it? Any help will be greatly appreciated!
