Out and about @ 7am this morning. Grabbed an egg mcmuffin @ mickey d's for breakfast and headed out to a spot I've been working for a while. This spot hasn't produced much, only a few wheaties. Today was no exception, as after 4 hours of solid hunting, I had a pouch full of trash and one lousy wheatie to show for it.
Decided to head out to one of the most heavily detected spots in the entire city. This spot is HUGE, but has been pounded for decades. Still, the occasional goodie pops up every now and then, and today would prove to be no exception.
Started out in a spot that was inaccessible earlier this year. After an hour or so, I had only 2 wheaties (not too many deep signals), and decided to move on to an area I've never detected before, but have had my eye on for quite some time.
Things started off VERY slowly in the new section, with barely $1 in clad the first hour. Headed over to some large, old trees to try my luck there. Saw what appeared to be an odd looking washer right on the surface near the largest tree. Picked it up, and lo and behold, it was a Goetz phone token!! Right on the surface!! "Now that's a good sign" I thought to myself. Within minutes, I was digging wheaties everywhere. About half an hour later, near another large tree, I got a BANGER 12-46 @ 3 inches, and we all know what that means, don't we? It turned out to be a beautiful '48 Washington (I seem to be digging a lot of them lately; this one is silver coin no. 56 for the year for me)!! A few minutes later, after digging some clad, I wandered over near yet another large tree. I saw what appeared to be a copper mem cent right on top of the dirt at the base of this tree. As I picked it up, I noticed what appeared to be a shield on the reverse. "Hey, this looks like an indian" I thought, and turned it over....HOLY S*** it's an 1880 indian!! Right on the surface!! There is still some surface crust, but from what I can see it is in EXCELLENT condition, and possibly has a full liberty as well!!
It is the oldest indian head I've found to date, and my third oldest coin ever found!! And a surface/eyeball find at that!! I finished the day with a few more wheaties and a "good for 50 cents in trade" token.
Todays totals: 1880 indian (surface find in AWESOME condition), '48 Washington, "good for 50 cents in trade" token from Math Igler's restaurant, bar, and casino on Chicagos north side (apparently they had singing waiters!!), Goetz phone token, CTA token (my 3rd). Not pictured are 10 wheats (I still have to clean 'em), 2 more fired bullets (that makes like 50 now in my collection
), and about $6 in clad. Pics below. Enjoy!! I'll be back at it tomorrow, weather permitting!!
