Went out to the pounded park do some digging after dark for an hour last night. Dug a few things then went home and didn’t have a chance to look at them. Once I got a chance today, I took a look at what I dug. To my surprise there was a 1902 Barber dime! It came out of the ground so crusty that in the dark I assumed it was just a clad dime.

Very Nice!!! Congrats!!!

Now that is a surprise that will make you smile.

Nice find! Was it under or near a tree? Wondering what stained it..

Its some kind of corrosion, maybe associated with being wet?? The soil in some parts of this park does that to silver. It looks to me like some of the silver found in water that gets posted here.

I'm always surprised and happy to see coins like this still being pulled out of parks. I work on the road, and aside from a few private permissions I spend a lot of time in the public parks. Every time I see a thread like this I just feel motivated to keep trying them. I've pulled very few silvers from public parks, but they are out there. It feels more rewarding in a park than a virgin yard. :icon_thumleft: Out of all the detectors that have been in that park, you won that coin. Congrats.

Looks more like it came out of the sea!

thats the crustiest silver Ive ever seen.

Congrats on the Barber !

It's up to you but the best way I've found to clean very stained, tar covered and silver coins that had iron sitting on them for decades, is to use an Electrolysis Bath.

I think I’m going to keep it as is. I cleaned a silver coin that looked like this before by soaking it in vinegar. It removed the crust but the coin was pitted underneath.

This is the coin I cleaned with vinegar. It’s a Canadian quarter found in the same part of the park as the Barber dime. You can see a smooth non-pitted spot at about the 4-o’clock position on it where there wasn’t any of the crust.

That is a nice surprise. Nice find.

Looks like it's an "S" mint also, which is a bit harder to find. :icon_thumleft:
