Surprise From the Corn Field.

Howdy Folks. Of course I got off work and zipped straight across the road and into the corn field. Headed toward the spot I found the Shield Nickel. First good target was a 1900 Indian recovered from a dirt clod. Not five minutes and I am dancing! Worked a few feet further and got a solid repeatable tone around a penny. Dug the flattened copper cent. Can't make out any detail and I like the patina so I'll leave it as is. Found the two piece button right on the surface. As much as I tried NOT to dig iron it's just everywhere. Some of the iron is pretty cool though so I am doing the farmer and me a favor by hauling it out. I decided to head over to south side slope and see if there were any targets over there. Of course there was. I dug me a SLING BLADE! A few minutes later I start digging parts of an old oil lamp. Then a few feet away the ornate and mangled old brass skeleton key plate. Oh how I wish this piece wasn't torqued out of shape.

Sun went down and I headed home to clean up the goodies. Upon further inspection of the oil lamp I recognize a shield on the wick turn wheel. Get my Optivisor loop on and see some ingenious soul designed a wheel from an 1880 Indian head Cent! SWEET! Had a great time and the weather right now is perfect. Just dry as heck still. That lamp wick adjuster has got to be the coolest (also oldest) example of that I have ever seen. They even notched the edges for better grip; superb find!

It's a "kludge". eh? Cool! I am still pretty "high" from finding my first Shield Nickel Sunday. Today's hunt was just keeping me riding that wave. Then I spotted the Indian Head Oil Lamp Wick Wheel and I went back into complete hysteria! I love the personal touch of the worked Indian Head and I am sure this will be one of my more favorite recoveries for quite some time. Thanks for your commentary and new word definition.

soak it all in and enjoy the sweet finds, ride that wave as long as you can and when it finally plays out, find another "field of dreams". congrats again. Me, I had a super short hunt yesterday as I wait on my remote to be returned. Other than the xtra "help" from two small girls, I just dug some clad which they thought was really great. Today though, it has rained off and on all day and I am super thankful!

I guess I only think of my back, hips, legs, etc when I am about a hundred feet away from the Command Vehicle and my Park Ranger pouch is stuffed with about 15 pounds of iron. I look like Boris Karloff playing the Mummy gimping back toward the CV. I came up with a plan though. I invited my buddy Joe Dirt to come help me clear this field tomorrow and maybe score some goodies. He loves iron about as much as I do. We should have quite a collection once finished. Hopefully some keepers as reward for our labors.

Indeed Buckle Boy. It was dusk when I recovered it and the sun had gone down. It was so cool to notice what I had after cleaning it. Still buzzing from my first Shield Nickel recovery on Sunday this revelation of coolness just sent me right back into hysteria! I love the thought of who made this and all things considered with this find. It will be one that will never be forgotten for sure.

I would consider this Saturday through Monday my most fun three day stretch of hunting EVER! Not the best finds I have ever recovered but, the knowledge I have worked this sight for years and never managed a single Indian Head Cent. A handful of Wheaties and some old ones and a silver GW quarter is all my keeper coins up to this year. Four Indian Heads the last three days and one transformed into an oil lamp wick wheel plus my first ever Shield Nickel made for a very rewarding experience. Hauling probably close to 200 lbs. of iron from a sight over the years with not much to show for it sounds ...crazy! It ain't crazy no more and I'll continue to haul even more iron now that I know there's some keepers in the mix.

This is the kind of real world situations we all see now days at old sites too. All....or most of the easy pickings are picked! Now we need to put in some sweat equity, lol. That shield nickel is definitely high on my list of wanted 1st's.
