I looked at a canteen today, supposedly from the Civil War, but I am somewhat skeptical.  It may be right as rain, but i just don't know!  Any thoughts on this one?  P.S.  The holes are from powder post beetles and not faked, although this might not make much difference!

It looks like a Revolutionary War period canteen. These I believe were referred to a "wagon canteens" due to the large size. It would be primarily kept with a wagon for a drink during the day. The personal canteens are smaller. Nothing suspect about it. Of course could be a little later than the Revolution. The reddish hue is what's left of the original red paint.

Wow! That's awesome! Thanks so much!

Except for the one broken band, it's in pretty good shape. If it's for sale and reasonable, I'd get it. I only have 1 from the Rev War in my collection of mostly useless stuff. The smaller round "cheesebox" type but it has all the original red paint and is dated "1775". Twern't cheap.

Thanks....I think make an offer or do some trading if I can!
