Suspender hook or hanger of some sort?

I dug this today and put a round ball beside it for reference. This seems ultra thick to be a suspender clip but whadda I know?

Reminds me of those buckles on the old rubber galoshes. It's a strap hook off something? Maybe an old trunk or saddle pack ??
