Of course, not a real sword end. But it looks like a miniature sword handle.

Appears Goldish in color, but of course not gold. No markings or lettering anywhere that I can see.

Looks like a copy of a Mexican Officer's sword like the full sized one below. Notice the Eagle and Shield on the crossguard:

Info for the sword above:
Eagle Hilt Mexican War Militia Officer's Sword, ca 1820-40, with 29.85" single-edged blade with 1/2-length fuller and 1/2-length false edge, left ricasso with crowned head symbol (German); cast brass shell form quillon with cast brass guard with shield-breasted spread-winged eagle, clutching arrows and olive branch, on stippled ground flanked by cornucopia, left and sheave of grain, right; scrolled knuckle bow with central rosette, left and Greek soldier with lance, right; closed beaked eagle head cast brass pommel front ferrule; carved ribbed walrus ivory grip; total length 35.26". Black leather scabbard with throat, and middle band, each carrying rings.

Looks very similiar Drache.

As far as a letter opener, it is very small and would have been a very small letter opener if it was one.

Ah I just noticed the second picture is the back and thus only half!

I think it was simply the "hilt" of a "sword" on a plaque or something like that, maybe a coat of arms or something similar....

You might have something there!!!A buddy just dug one (I have not seen it yet but by his description and the fact another buddy dug the same one only bigger last year)He has researched it and although I forget the history his was the smaller one and went to bowie style knife which was part of a "set",the knife and sword.Both were found in strictly 1850 ish sites!!
