Sword guard??????

Found this on a site we've been hunting some 18th and early 19th century items. A few war of 1812 buttons and cannonball have come from here along with civilian buttons. Hard to tell if it attached and was broken on the narrow end. Very decorative and seems to have neen silver gilted copper. Any ideas?

I hate no one has responded. I am somewhat unsure of what you have. It does look like part of the guard. The one I found in one of my books had an eagle on it. Maybe this post will stir up some interest.

There appears to be a word or name cast beneath the image on the front. Possible etched markings on back too? I'm less sure of that than the word on the front.

The more i look at this item the less i think sword guard. I think it may be cabinet hardware or somehing of that nature. The scene seems to me to be adam and eve with tree in middle with serpent wrapped around figure on lefts leg. Its gilted inside and out so i have to assume the inside was visible to whatever it went to. Nice decorative piece at any rate. No markings on back or front that i can see. Thanks for looking. HH

I don't think it is a sword guard. It could be the bowl of a fruit or dessert service.

You might trying writing to a museum with a specialist arms and armour department such as the Met in New York or Philadelphia. Or you could try the Swords Forum- Sword Forum International - The Front Page ; at least they might be able to confirm if does or doesn't belong to a hilt.
