I visited with a couple of elderly brothers that live nearby yesterday. They were able to hunt some prime South Dakota locations back when it wasn't a crime and did very well.
anyway, this shell piece belongs to one of them and it's at least the third one I've seen from the area. I haven't seen any flint birds though.

That's an awesome display! What's the story on the pistol?

These Shell Birds are very well documented and have been found in Mounds, Graves, and as surface finds. There is a couple of guys I know from New Mexico that have found a few each. You can find articles and site reports all over the net about these. But, on the other hand there is absolutely zero documentation of a Flint Eagle/Thunderbird ever having been found on an excavation, in any Mound, or in any Grave.

That said, awesome looking pieces quito. Those Fish Hooks are amazing. Very large examples. Is the red Pipe at the bottom a Rabbit? Thanks for sharing this. Just my kind of artifacts.

LOL! Steve, I couldn't figure out what it was either. But was pretty sure it was a type of bird. The pistol fell out of a strip of goodies 4 foot down along the bank of the river. He also recovered a nice pot that was easy to put back together from there.

Also, I was told those x- large fish hooks were likely used as gaffs. The natives would trap the fish, and that was the method for actually taking them from the impoundment.

This is the pot, he said he saw more that could have been put back together, but they were more into the flint. He'skicking himself now though. There was very few pieces to put this back together completely

and if you look close you can see a turtle head top right piece. This was highly polished and he really would have liked to find the rest of it.

very cool,thanks for sharing

That is some fine stuff , thanks for posting. I have seen some x-large hooks and always thought that they snagged fish with them from streams and rivers never thought about a impoundment.:icon_thumright:
