Took a quick swing down to the local park while the kids were napping, and glad I did. I went to a section of the park I suspected had a house on t a while ago. The park dated to 1925 and all of the surrounding houses predated it so I figured why not.

Found about 100 40-oz malt liquor caps and shredded aluminum but no coins. Finally got a solid hit that read like an old penny at 6", but I welcomed anything at this point. Dug down and felt around the hole since a 1" root was right in the way. Felt it!

I pulled it out and thought it was a clad, then the shine and thought it a Barber. Then I saw the face in really good shape and saw a seated liberty.

1889-s seated dime!!!

I didn't even take all of the dirt off yet but it appears in great shape. Does anyone know how to remove the black without cleaning and affecting the grade?

Anyway I'm stoked and it's a lower mintage beauty that came from a POUNDED park!

Congrats! nice shape, HH!

Man I like finding seated coins. I bet you were stoked. Great job.

Sweet seated congrats ....

Nice coin Scraps! Buckleboy has a method for removing that black. You could PM him and I'm sure he'd help

One way to get most of the very dark spots off without harming the coin is to soak in warm water and backing soda while wrapping the coin in aluminum foil with the shiny side against it. Take it out and lightly go over it with a q-tip. Repeat as necessary. About any other way (like rubbing) will damage the coin.

It will remove the really dark stuff and lighten some of the gray, making it look better but not brand new of course.

try aluminum foil, salt, baking powder and boiling water it works very well

Those are some good tips for cleaning and quite similar. I would hate to ruin the coin (ie. depreciate).

Another quick question that may seem obvious: do the dark spots affect value?

Just a quick note-I'm not planning on selling it, I just like to know that there's always that option;)

I am not totally sure, but I do know that corroded or ground worn coppers and nickels will be graded appropriately and then have something like "environmental damage" assigned to it that will affect value. Hard to say if discolored silver is rendered the same.

love the seated!

Old, beautiful and SILVER.
You can't beat that.
Congrats.

Cleaned up

Coin collectors ( at least around here )are a fickle bunch, so any dug coins are going to be extra scrutinized. Nice coin..

I used that tin foil/ baking soda/ water method. Not bad but I feel like it looks cloudy. Oh well, it's still a keepa'
