ok, try to follow,,,,you get blindfolded, and dropped off anywhere in the u.s.,,,you have no idea where you are hunting,,,,ok here's the question, how can you tell if you are hunting in good or bad ground with the tejon,,,,if you are hunting in bad ground, are you making radical changes to your ground balance,,,,and how do you know if you are making these radical changes if there isnt a beginning and end to the ground balance knob,,,,they say the 12 by 10 coil penetrates bad ground better,,,,what in the world tells me, im in bad ground,,,,,and if im not in bad ground is it to my disadvantage to use the 12 by 10 coil. ive been lazy for too many years with the xlt and dfx with their automatic ground balance, and let throw this in,,,the dfx is history with me, im hanging on to the xlt, but this tejon can really find the bullets,,,,ok let me get back to what im not making any sense of,,,,ive got the idea of the dd coil thing,,,,,but what i dont have an idea of is this good ground, bad ground thing,,,,,and how you determine if you are in bad or good ground with the tejon,,,,i know this probably makes no sense and you guys are thinking,,,whos this idiot,,,,but if someone can make heads or tails out of what im asking id appreciate it,,,,and if someone wants to take the time to try to answer this for me,,,remember im an ole dumb grunt, and you have to go slow with me,,,,,semper fi, doug culp

I replied in your other post, don't know if it helps or not! Tejon ground balancing is pretty easy just takes some getting used to.

Wow, I get to reply to a good friend.

Doug.

The threshhold does have a beginning and an end. I found this out by talking to Rusty at Tesoro.

I know the knob will turn endlessly but when turning it there is a point where all of a sudden it seems to get a tiny bit harder, you can feel just a bit of resistance, that is the beginning. I think something like four or six full turns from there it will again get easier. If you turn that knob slowly back and forth enough you will feel the difference in your fingers. Once you find that spot count the number of turns until it seems to free up and then go halfway back. You will find it. Once you have it you will never lose it and if you do you will know how to find it again. Once you have it ground balance as normal, you will probably have to turn it a turn at most, either direction, to get your ground balance

I am running my Tejon as hot as I can. Unfortunately ground still frozen up here.

My cover is also on the way from England and looking forward to seeing you again soon.

I like your scenario with the airplane. Blindfold me and drop me over Gettysburg, please.

The ground constantly changes. I just got back from S. C. and even where I was at, the sugar sand had pockets of more mineralized soil. I had to adjust the ground balance several dozen times in a day of hunting. I always ran it just slightly positive where there was just a slight increase in pitch when lowering the coil. As for the balancing knob, I believe it's a 10 turn knob meaning 10 revolutions from one side to the other. There's no real stop at the end, just a slight drag when you reach the end of the turn. As jhettel said, you'll feel it when you reach that point. Good luck and HH!

I'm pretty sure the ground balance is a three and three-quarter turn type. Like jhettel said, you can turn it endlessly but at some point you will feel a little more resistance. It took me a few tries to get it right but once you do, you'll be ready to rock and roll. Try turning the knob very slowly until you feel that tiny bit more resistance - then turn the other direction very slowly until you feel it again. Those are your "starting points" - balancing will come much easier once you distinguish those "ends".

Happy hunting...
