8" all day long. Plenty deep, doesn't "flip up" as much in knee-deep surf. :skullflag:
 

Consider each swing should slightly overlap the previous. Now grab an 8" cardboard cutout and tape it to the end of a stick and practice swinging. Each swing will only let you move 6" forward. Eeeks, that's a snail pace! You'll hear elderly folks with walkers screaming for you to get outta' the way! lol. 10" gets my vote!
 

If you're not hunting in the surf, My theory has always been "the bigger coil, the better".........as long as you still have sensitivity to small targets. In the surf, around fire rings, and other iron infested areas, the small coil would be a better choice.
