Just curious as to users thoughts on these units. I have a SS umax and a friend has a sl 3 that has been in a closet for years. I love my tesoro but always wanted to get a whites classic of some kind. Which one is deeper, handles iron/trash better. Both have stock coils (8" & 9.5)
I had to sideline for awhile, too much quarreling, brand defensiveness, and seeing certain people waging war on others. It got to be too silly for me after awhile..
The little Tesoro will handle bad soil better with an elliptical DD coil, the Whites is more of an all-around detector with less depth, and I can't remember seeing one with a DD coil, ever. To me, the old Whites is more of toy, but the uMax can dance with some of the high end ones, and that's the end of it, but it depends on where you hunt and what the soil is like there too. You can buy a Fisher F5 or Teknetics Omega 8000 that is far superior to either one of them in almost every case, and they both have a lot more toys to fiddle with and customize. And if you want to find small gold, the Fisher Goldbug Pro is the best in its class, and the best for the money hunting salt, or high black sand beaches, better than any of the other above. Go to youtube and you can compare them all one against the other:
