Tesoro Vaquero, Sand Shark, F-75
I bought a Vaquero this spring and used it a fair amount over the summer.

Once you switch into discrimination mode you can then crank up your threshold. this is called "supertuning" in the manual. On the bench I was able to show myself that it gave another inch or two in detection range. I assume it will imrpove detection capabilities in the ground as well.

Once supertuned though, you will have to turn the threshold down to use the pinpoint button or if you want to switch into "all-metal" mode. If you don't it will howl like a banshee!

Although you can't discimate out a pure silver coin, you can discimate out some of the coppers and other coins of mixed composition. Plus, I belive that increasing the discimination will also decrease the depth. So the choice of what setting to use becomes a personal decision based on what you want/expect to find as well as your style. Your best bet is to experiment with some in your backyard on the ground.

One mod I did was to install a large knob on the discrimination dial so that I could "thumb" is more easily to try and help ID a target. Plus I was having hard time seeing the position of the smaller stock knob. I find the big knob really helpful. (see pic below)

I hope this helps, and good luck!!

Hey Cossack, that is a neat idea of the larger knob on the Vaquero. And your right on in your post too.

Len,

The threshold control adjusts the sound of the machine from silent to a loud hum while hunting. The signal of a target can be read better when you have a reference sound while hunting. This is because the target sound also may decrease. You would miss the decrease if you do not have a reference hum or sound. Tuning the detector to a slight hum while hunting defiantly increases the "talk back" of any detector, however we all have different preferences, that's why having an adjustable control for threshold is preferable.

In case you weren't aware, at least two headphone manufacturers offer phones that have a limiter in them. It gives normal sound to quieter sounds, but limits the volume of loud ones. That feature might save you some problems if you get a new set of phones in the future!

I plan to get a pair sometime for my M6, as it really blasts the ears in pinpoint mode!
