Testing Out New Camera: Recent Purchases

I got this camera for Christmas and I decided to experiment with it by taking pictures of coins. The 1937 Buffalo nickel was bought from Bill Fivaz for $35. The 1883 Nickel was bought for $13 from my LCS. The 1861 quarter was bought for $45 from a dealer from my coin club. The quarter has been cleaned, but I left it in an old envelope for a period of several months and that is how it turned out. Tell me what you think of both the pictures and the coins! I took an 8 1/2" x 11" sheet of white paper and folded into an envelope. Since it was full of sulfur, it toned the silver quite nicely.

I'd be careful artificially toning coins. Some paper have acids in them that will continue attacking the coin long after you separate them. Stopping the toning process can be harder than starting it sometimes.

The coin had already been harshly cleaned, and I wouldn't tone a pristine coin without knowing the exact result. My goal was only to make the coin look less cleaned, which I accomplished. The main ingredient in my experiment, however, was circulating air, not the paper. I put the coin in an open envelope on top of my dresser and let it sit, giving the coin a more natural tone. I appreciate your insight, though.

Great photos, the reverse buffalo looks a little fuzzy. Was there camera shake on that one perhaps?

Was the Quarter shiny like the nickels before the tone job?
You got a good deal imo on the Buffalo
& what coin store do you shop at to get a deal like that on the 1883 V (almost a steal IMO)

The quarter wasn't shiny, but it had flushed-out, white surfaces that just looked cleaned. It had started to tone back, so I put it in the envelope until I got satisfactory colour.

Believe it or not, my LCS is actually a pawn shop that has a section dedicated to coins. Many of their coins have fair prices and accurate grades, such as $110 for an EF 1931 S Lincoln Cent, but some seem a bit high, like $100 for a harshly cleaned 1853 O half dollar.

Exactly what happened. I'm working on increasing the shutter speed so that won't happen as often.
