Was out in the new Mexico Desert a few days ago and dug up a cache of old license plates. The area looked like it was an old farm stead with a small rock house foundation next to an abandoned water well. Why some one would keep or bury these is a mystery (maybe an old Navajo dealership) lol! but it was a fun hunt just the same. Also found with the plates were few old cork type bottles, and a heart shaped rock. Among the plates were a 1930 California, 1926 Oklahoma,1929 Texas, and several New Mexico Plates from 1924 to 1932. Some of the plates were trashed but there are a few that look like that could be restored with a little TLC. Here are a few pics. Enjoy

If this thread winds up being of interest to anyone I will send close ups of the plates after I bead blast them and salvage what I can.

Sorry here are the pics of the heart shaped rock and bottlesphoto 1.webpphoto 2.webpNew Mex.webp

that is odd that there would be a mixture of states represented. hmmm.... maybe car thieves?

Miss the wide open spaces out there. Too bad that most of the land is owned by 'the man.' ;) lots of great old sites behind nameless barbed wire out there!!!

dunk them in some oxalic acid and you will be able to see what color they were.....(unless they were burnt at some point...)

I'm thinking a chop shop.......LOL

Thanks for the tip Pete! I'll give it a try and if works I'll get back to ya!

interested in seeing how they turn out - you can check the message board on www.therustybunch.com - mostly about cleaning up rusty old beer cans...but also other sorts of tins/etc - they have a lot of info - I was surprised how well it worked on some rusty brown cans and stuff I found in the woods..

Cool finds. Is there a way to run the numbers to see who they belonged to and the type of vehicle. That would be cool especially if turned out to be someone well known.happy hunting

Yeah it would be interesting to run the numbers. Hopefully they don't belong to some missing persons

Bank robbers change plates also, maybe there is a better cache around just waiting for you to find it.

Just look under the nearest rock!
