The Cannonball Guy Still Kicking Around?

Found this mortar frag today marked with a large "2" and a small "3" and was hoping for some help in determining the meaning. The ball is likely Rev War Era or slightly earlier.

I guess he's on hiatus. I Googled the hell out of this and can't find another example...

I would guess just a coincidence. I've seen the same thing a couple of times with scratches on buttons... looked liked numbers, and even centered, but enough questions to make you you scratch your head and think... it is but it isn't.

I thought of that but these are definitely purpose made...they are much clearer in person.
