Let me start by saying thanks to DON. This year's hunt was even better than the previous two years (in terms of finds) and probably accomodations and such. Great job Don, Beekcake, Steve and everyone else who maked it possible. There is good and bad with this type of hunt:

The Cons:
 Too many people. Competition was fierce. You had to be first at a spot to get the Big Silver (there were a couple exceptions).
 People who don't follow the rules. Yes, part of it was ignorance and miscommunication. I did see the “greed” factor of human nature come out.
 You might think you did good until you see what the next person finds.

The Pros:
 Having so many people made what would have taken 2-3 people months to find happen in one day! Instant revelation.
 Meeting other people and hooking up with old friends.
 Enjoying other friends success in the finds.
 Learning more on how to read a site and hunt it properly. It's always a challenge to quickly get a read on a site to find where the most likely spot for coins is and why.
 Finding some decent finds.

Anyway, details of the hunt from my perspective:

The day started with the meeting at Bob Evans and dispite Beefcakes great map people getting lost on the way to the camp. Then sign in and the disregard for the “wait until eveyone is signed in before hunting” rule. :(

I probably should have studied the maps/history a little bit more as I just kind of followed the crowd down toward the old campsite. Too crowded so I branched off. I wandered around and after a bit I came to a flat area. A guy from Michigan/Wisconson (?) told me he had just found a silver Quarter in this flat area.

Not knowing when they made these flat areas (clearly by dozer). I decided to work the area a little bit. I was rewarded with my first silver of the trip. :)

I worked the area a little more and didn't find anymore silver or wheat pennies so I decided to more on. Hunted a bit more and came upon JerDFX (Jeremy) and his brother Lance.
Jeremy:

Lance:

Jeremy excitedly told me “Dude, Lance just found a Walker and I found a Standing Liberty Quarter!”. So I said cool and started hunting. Picked up a wheat and then found a Merc. I think before I even found the Merc Lance calls over “Standing Liberty Quarter, Baby.” ;D Now I was getting pumped. Ended up finding wheats and two silver but it was hot and we were getting dehydrated so we decided to head back to the car. Dave and I came back to the spot after lunch worked the area a little bit and proceeded to work downhill. When we came to a ravine I looked up and saw a ridge of pines and some flat land below it. I had to get back soon (driving home for the evening), was again dehydrated and tired so I told Don and Dave I was going back (If I would have gone forward there were some awesome coins in that spot that had not been found yet - Morgan Dollar, Barbers, Silver Halves, etc). ::)

So, I left at before 4pm on Friday. My finds for the short day:
FirstDaysfinds.jpg

Saturday while everyone was finding Morgan Dollars, LC’s and Barbers I was at Nate’s track meet.
I got back to the camp with Nate by about 2:30 and we had some lunch. Hunted around the lunch cabin found a few things but not much. I asked Nate if he wanted to go for the old stuff or silver . He opted for the later so I lead him back to the spot Lance, Jeremy and I found our silver at. What surprised me was how many more silver and wheats he pulled from that spot.

I managed another half dozen wheats and a silver rosie but that was it. I know the second time back hunting with the MXT I was not hitting stuff like with the DFX. Finds from the second day:

It was fun hanging out with Danimal, Don, Zoso, Scott, Spencer, Handyman and his Uncle in the evening. Handyman’s uncle cleaned house. He has an old White’s hipmount 6000. And he knows his machine! Here is a picture of the frenzy Danimal created by finding ______.

This was kind of a neat find – now if I can only get that letter opener out of the trace….

All in all not bad but relative to some others…well never mind.

Great post as always Bob. Amazing pics and wonderful finds

Great finds! Since I found my first silver this year, (after 5 years of searching) I would be overjoyed to find a mere 'merc'. I would be even happier find a standing liberty.

Nice broach! Looks like a good time.

Great post, Bob, with narrative and pictures to fill in the blanks.

I agree. Super job Bob.
That looks like a blast. I can't believe it's been a year already. :o I remember your last hunt too.
Congrats on the silver, and all you finds.

Way to go, bud, on your recoveries. Were these virgin or "planted" finds?

Kyle

Yeah, Bob it was good to see you.

Found that greed was the name of the game for some, (I assume the new invitees) who didn't follow the rules about not hunting certain areas until Sunday. I was really disappointed to find out that the fresh sopt had been picked before I got to it Sunday. >:( Still pulled a wheaty spill and a Merc out. Some of them even felt an area was all there own. :icon_scratch:

But, it was great to see the long timers of DFX again, and if I decide to hang on to the dfx I MAY come next year.

Added a few of my finds to your post.

Anyway, Danimal invited me up to hunt with you guys sometime this summer, so I'll see you then.
Best, Ken

Dude - Totally virgin. One guy found an 1800's "spill". It consited of 4 coins (three different types and two of them silver). I'm not saying yet cause he might post....Although I don't think he is a member here so anyway - two large cents, a seated quarter and a half dime!

Zoso also found an EARLY 1800's pocket spill that would make you proud! ;D Come on Dave, post those coins, boy.

wtg on those nice finds...how much does it usually cost to enter one of those hunts ??

Cost was $15 bucks but you have to have a DFX/XLT. So that might cost a little more.

Doug - you should come up next year for the hunt. I can let you use my DFX. I can give you a one hour crash course training lesson. ;D :D

Ken,
That would be cool to hook up sometime. I have a lot of respect for the DFX even though I use a different machine. So don't call it a "____" anymore. :D :D

Bob

I have never been on a group hunt, but I'm stoked now. A little friendly competition and a chance at silver dollars and such sounds awesome to me. I'm thinking about asking the manager of the park I'm hunting if they would be willing to have a group hunt. I'm sure a little cash entry fee might help convince them. I just wonder what someone would spend on this opportunity. This is the park where I'm finding 100 plus coins a day and about 15 or so silver dimes so far. I have found lots of clad dimes and quarters, but no silver quarters and halves, let alone silver dollars. I've barely scratched the surface here, it's quite large.

Well it really isn't a "______" ;D I just have another detector that's my favorite, and it found the silver on Sunday. Although the ground we had to hunt in you could've used a cheapy detector and found as much. Depth was not the word of the day. The ground was super noisey, and the stock program was plenty good enough. I had a good time really.

Sounds like fun :o

My mind is aglow with whirling transient nodes of thought cureening through a cosmic vapor of invention.

Sounds like theres money to made sponsoring something like this.

Maybe use different metals for different dollar amounts.

I just need a piece of protected property :icon_pirat:

OH by the way nice finds and i know you had fun.

I told you to lay off that pipe! :tard: :tongue3:

Great finds Bob and Nate...

Between Jeremy and Lance and You and Nate hitting the same small area, you guys really pulled out some great finds.

I cannot believe I drove all that way, Just to find 4 cents! (I'll post them soon..they are soaking)

Kas.... When you pulled the Rosie out from the center of the path, My jaw dropped..I seen about 10 other people hunt that same 4 foot wide pathway to the point on Friday. We will see you and the CZ this summer..

Don, Beefcake and Steve really pulled off a great hunt... Lots of new friends and a whole wealth of information shared between friends.

Lest anyone think this DFX Only gig was a planted hunt...it wasn't.

And great post and pics Bob...it was great spending some time with you and meeting so many people. Spencer kept asking about when you and Nate were going to get back to camp Saturday.
Don has called and asked me to post pics and a write up. I'll get to it...
You guys really cleared that patch. I was amazed Sunday when Nate picked a nickle from that small area you and I had just declared null and void!
I agree on the cons though..

BTW...call me...weather permitting we hit the stagecoach stop this weekend?

It is good to know that; I have no patience for those "seeded" hunts. >:(

Keep the detecting fever high, bud!
