I know this is an old thread but I just wanted everybody to know that DeLong, the postmaster, was also editor of the local newspaper. Many of the local folks accused him of making up the story to sell newspapers. Not saying the story isn't true, because I love the story, but it wouldn't be "out of the ordinary" for a newspaper editor to make up a story to sell papers. Maybe even planted a skull to be found later ha ha ha? Sounds gruesome but believe it or not it wouldn't be the first time a "treasure" site was planted with old bones/skull. How did they have access to bones/skulls "back then"? There were ways. Still this is one of my favorite stories ever. I've had it in my files for over 40 years!
