I decided to get out this morning for another hunt. I hit a yard that I’ve been hunting the last couple weeks. Although it’s been hit by me and others before, there is an elevated area in the back loaded with fill dirt. But there’s about 15 foot between the fill and there back fence that I felt may have not been hit before and did not have fill in it. The area is kind of swampy and wet and the artifacts were pretty deep.
My first artifact to day was a common brass buckle. My second dig were the 3 69 caliber round balls that were all in the same hole. A nice surprise for sure. My next pull was the lead flint wrap that had not been folded or used prior to its loss. My next find was my favorite of the day. They are sometimes referred to as a hanger buckle. In the early days they were thought to be part of the dragoon belt but that has been found to not be true. Someone in Florida did some research and found that early in the 2nd Seminole War they were used as a buckle on their pack animals. Their use was discontinued shortly after their introduction because they did not work very well. So they are only found at a few of our period forts. My next find was this broken brass spike and the last hole gave up this brass shoulder scale. Although I’ve found a few at the fort, this one may be be my best one. Thanks for looking and happy digging to all!!!
