found today near Richmond Va in an area we have found Civil War items. Any help< I am stumped?

Neat. It's part of the tailpiece from an old Gibson stringed instrument. Probably from an early mandolin, and certainly not a guitar. Here's a company offering a modern replacement part:

You're welcome. I used to own a vintage Gibson guitar and recognised the branding immediately. It won't be Civil War of course. The company was founded in 1902 as the "Gibson Mandolin-Guitar Mfg. Co. Ltd".

Nice find! Someone on the Mandolin Cafe forum may be able to give you a date range and more information on that. It may have some value if you're inclined to sell it.
