So I ran into a guy in the park yesterday using the same machine who was complaining that he hadn't recovered anything over about 6” deep. So I asked him where he had been hunting and he quickly told me. So I then asked him if he had accounted for the grass?
In that area of the park the grass is really thick and even when freshly cut, which it was, it's still very easy to lose and inch or two because that thick grass never allows the coil to reach the surface of the ground. Point being, he was actually getting at 8-9” out of his machine if not for the thick grass.
It's something easily overlooked when we dig our targets and try to evaluate depth, it being just natural for us to measure from the surface “of the ground around our hole” rather than from the surface of that thick grass. Prior to digging our plug and once we have centered our target simply press down on the coil and one can usually see the coil sink another inch or two, sometimes even more, and quite often even in freshly cut thick grass.
Just some FYI I thought I'd pass along.
