Hello fans of dirt digging! I figured it was time to get back out there in the heat and do some excavating
Don and I took on the Great Wall, The Bush and finally The Bottles
It has been a bit since we had time to go out and finally dig some pits
But we made up for lost time when we hit a pocket full of glass at what used to be a very large home. Started out on what we thought was a good pit but turned out to be a foundation about 4 feet deep and who knows how long. It ended up being a wall to maybe a basement or cellar or to China for all we knew. Not a pit, so we moved on to the next one and found that the wall continued about 20 feet to the south and turned into a cement block foundation
. This building was not on our maps from 1893 so who knows what it was. We know for sure it was not a pit. So we moved back across the sidewalk where we knew there was a smaller trash type pit. There we found a few bottles and glass shards, nothing to write home about
On to the next pit on another street. This time the maps proved right. Prior to 1893 there once stood a huge 2 and 1/2 story home with bay windows and a large porch area. The house is long gone and the evergreens were growing right over where the pits were located. Don probed the area and felt the distinct layering of the dirt and ash. I checked it out and it was a no brainer, we had to dig this one. It was centered straight behind where the old house once stood. We had already dug two smaller pits where we also removed a huge bush and root ball.
Here we go again......So we started out at around 9:30 am with the bush removal and began our decent into Mother Earth
Got down around 4 feet or so and saw some small pottery pieces and glass. The layering was perfect, ash and dirt and sand. I probed it at that depth and with my 6 foot probe I could not feel the bottom but it felt loaded with glass. Boy were we right
The glass layer(use layer) was about 3 to 4 feet thick and the bottom was around 9 to 10 feet down. As you can see it took our six foot ladder and then some!!
We had to dig with our small rake because there were bottles upon bottles upon bottles upon, well you get the picture
Medicines, beers, perfumes, chamber pots, whiskeys, flasks, and the occasional shoe leather. It appeared as though the pit was used in the 1890's but not any older. There was a double eagle flask that was broken but that could have been a late throw or the pit was dipped and this was left behind. A couple of trimold medicines were also left behind.
All in all we had a blast and it was not doubt the pit that belonged to the huge house that once stood here. It was evident too that whomever lived here was hooked on certain medicines and extracts. There were at least 20 beef extracts in the pit as well as 75 to 100 non specific medicinal bottles. The cool find was broken though, the huge Tate Water bottle from Tennessee. Even the gallon blob beers would keep the local drunkard boozed up
There may yet be another pit within the bushes but we have to wait until some rain and for the heat to break. Hope ya like all the pictures(32). It was fun and we look forward to the next adventure! Be safe out there and goodluck on your next hunts.
