Went into a bank this morning looking for some halves. The only one they had were in the counter bag. $250 worth. The lady had to hand count them twice before letting me buy them. While she was counting them she set aside 2 silver pieces that caught her eye. I asked her about them and she said she has someone that she saves them for. I was blown away. I am new at this and had not experienced it before. I ended up still getting them but I still had that feeling. I later found a third that she had missed. Ha ha! The day mine!
The second bank I hit up had some halves the vault. I noticed an Ike dollar in her tray and asked if I could have that as well. Just then Ms. Nagg peered over and said "no no, we save those for so and so" So I didnt get that one!! Oh well, its a HUGE playing field. Some people just get the upper hand in those crooked a$$ small town banks.

That lady & bank sounds like one to avoid.
I may have said thanks, but no thanks and moved on.
She wasn't hand counting - she was CRHing....

I agree Tim.

That sure is a bummer HB. Your right though....there are alot of banks out there. That one sounds like a good dump bank if you have an account with them....lol. Congrats on pulling the one she missed....I hope it was a 90%'er. Keep plugging and good luck!

I hate that. These tellers should put stuff away and out of sight if they are saving it for somebody.

I agree the tellers should put it in the drawer out of sight if they are saving it or buying it themselves. Excuse me but that's bs to let it sit in plain sight and then tell anyone asking about it,sorry! They do that just to be nasty, and I bet half the time they are buying it and not holding it for a customer.

Glad you were able to pull one silver out of that bag, congratulations! You must be a very calm person because I think I would have told the teller you can keep all of them now. lol

I agree with all that's been said to this point....and if the bank is not too far away.........make it your dump bank.

That just falls under the category of cruel and unusual punishment.

Howeburger,

I would not be so quick to turn it into a dump bank. If the bag of $250 held 3 silver coins I would try to cultivate the relationship a little more. Next time you are in there and they set aside silver for Mr. X I would ask if Mr. X brings them coffee and pastries with a smile. More often than not they will cut loose with the coin. Just make sure you deliver on the next trip in if they give you the coins.

If it all goes well the bank may even start ordering boxes for you.

You should check with the bank manager. I know that the rule at the bank that I use (HSBC) is that if the customer can see it, they can buy it. If there is something that the teller wants to keep themselves or save for another customer, they have to put it in the vault or in their drawer. I've picked up silver that way, by looking around the tellers cage and spying it in their change tray. Once I see it, they have to sell it to me. At the branch that I go to each week, they will put stuff for me in their drawers and pull it out when I get there. That way no one else can see it and buy it. In return, I bring them candy on some holidays and keep them posted when new releases are coming out (quarters, dollars, and bills). The banks distribution center never tells them anything. I even print the pictures of the new bills off the BEP web site and give them copies so they know what they will look like.

However, you do catch more flies with honey versus vinegar; so if you think you can win them over with kindness (and sometimes you can) by all means; go for it.

The flies with honey thing will only get you in the door. If they collect siver too.... forget about it.

I agree, if they are saving them for someone they should be out of sight. If you are a client of that bank, then if you see it they should sell it to you.

Give them a nice big DUMP. If they won't let you unless you open an account, open a small savings account with the halves you bring in, ha!
