All Treasure Hunting
We have had some kind of Silver Coin every outing on this field, so that makes a pretty good silver streak for us.
We are still hunting outside of the Roman area & are runs are not as big as before but are still close to 30 minutes each.
It was Cru'dad's time to get both silvers:hello2: & the Roman one was way outside the Site. In fact we have nearly found as many silvers outside of the Site as inside it!

1 tiny Roman Coin
2 17th C Buttons, 1 decorated.
2 Leather Mounts
Broken Lead Cloth Seal
Nice complete Tudor Clothes Fastener (John the Baptist)
Medieval Spur Rowel
17th C Token
1699 Farthing
1670 Charles II Maundy Penny - The FIRST year they started producing 'dated' Maundy Sets.:icon_thumright:
An iron stained Siliqua of Valentinian I circa AD365.

Any Maundy coin is a rare find, but what makes this rarer is that its not holed.
I have found 6 Maundy coins of Charles II, 5 of which are holed;
3 x 1 Penny (now 4) - 1670, 1671, 1679, 168?.
1 x 2 Penny
2 x 3 Penny

My theory is that if you were given a set of coins from the King, they would have been treated as 'Touch Pieces'. The belief at the time was that his touch was like being touched by God, or as close as. Therefore, however poor they were they would keep 1 or more around their neck as a blessing for them or their family. I suspect that lots of them never went into circulation.

Hi , In the book written by London Magistrate Patrick Colquhoun in 1795 called A Treatise on the Police of the Metropolis Clearly states that tampering with gold or silver coins of the Crown was an act of Treason pp 436 -8 You know more than Archeologists ? When do want me to stop laughing ? TP

Not sure what point your trying to make, because you haven't got one. Lots of coins were holed.

I'm always in awe of the sheer amount of history that you and your Dad recover from the fields Cru.
Love the look of the Medieval Clothes Fastener and the cypher on this button.

Hope you and your dad have another great year,
Dave
Yeap, never could work out what that button was for, normally something like a local Govt org.
