"The Prairie Traveler"
Originally published in 1859 by US Army Captain Randolph Marcy, this book includes tips for crossing the country for California bound gold seekers. A plethora of information for pilgrims from one who had actually been there. The best part is the book includes information on 8 overland routes from civilization (as it was then) to the west. These itineraries list the mileage between camping places which were used by early day travellers, enabling us to locate them. Marcy blazed what is known as the California Road, coming west out of Ft. Smith AR and across Oklahoma. I feel like it's a great research tool and not really utilized that much.
