Couple of days ago local fire dept. gets a call for a Mercury spill (a cup full) seems a co. was hired to get a house ready for Estate sale Taking what they thought was worthless junk they threw it out side (or spilled it by accident ) and called the fire dept. Well Haz mat were the first to come, corden off the entire area, full hazard suits, deacon station etc after initial clean up They had to call a environment clean up co. They are digging up the yard as we speak and sealing the house Total bill may reach 100G's WOW! Seams funny records claim 1 million lbs of mercury were shipped to the Comstock load area and not one document shows any being brought out. Be careful out there

Good morning: sigh like soo many things, its being vastly over done. I doubt that there is a stream or lake in the US that doen't have free mercury in it's confines. Check your energy saving lamps which are highly reccomended by the envior groups, all use mercury. Here is a copy of 2 posts in this same group # 14 & # 17. 'If mercury works ...why not use it"--->

"HIO Peeps": During WW-2, I was a master horizontal bombardier and Nordan Bombsight mech. Since the Nordan bombsight was still considered secret at that time, we had to work in a closed, unventilated (no electricity there) Quonset Hut, temps ran to around 135 F. Shall I say hot and humid?

To establish a true vertical, we used open pools of mercury about 6 " in diameter to calibrate the telescope's vertical, a critical factor.

Now pools of open mercury at 135 F = close to a sat point of releasing mercury vapor.

I might also add that we filled hypodermics with the mercury and shot down flies with it ?? sheesh.

To cap it off, we used Carbontetrachloride to wash the basic parts with, 180 proof alky was used to clean the lens with - it had a horrible evaporation rate that just equalled it's trading value hehehehe

I sort a giggle when I now see that if a Mercury based thermometer is broken, you must redo the entire house. For your dental work, you may end up with a full drop of mercury in your tummy, yet ??? Need I remind you that a drop of mercury is used is 'all' energy saving light bulbs?

In any event, we worked for over a year under these conditions, the worst possibly imaginable, no-one knew better, yet no-one developed any adverse symptoms ?? I haven't degenerated into a drooling idiot, yet, but don't ask my wife, she is prejudiced, still have my teeth and most of my hair.

It appears that form of the mercury is it's basic, danger classification. Pure liquid mercury seem to be the least harmful.

In fact, a tablespoon of mercury orally, was the standard recommendation for constipation in my US Pharm of 1849?

So use the mercury if you wish, be confident that it doesn't equal cyanide, but read and follow all of the safety instructions.

HI again: I forgot to mention that when I had Arsenic poisoning I found that heavy metal poisoning was cured by using massive doses of Vit "C".in the 1930's. It was found to be an excellent chelating agent for all heavy metals. I used 1000 mg initially, in three doses a day, then raised it to 5000. In a week all of my arsenic poisoning symptoms were gone, and shortly after, my AA of my urine and saliva, showed me to be completely free of any heavy metals.

Soooooo hint, if you are going to use mercury take 2 -3000 milligrams of Vit "C" daily

I`ve recovered beads of mercury while panning for gold in the creeks that supply the water to Telluride Co. The mayor, who was doing some dirt work on my job told me not to tell anyone about it. This was in the 70`s. Bet you can still find it there.

I would have done it with a shovel and pail for 50%....wait 25%.....no, just 10%, thats right the low low price of 10%. :laughing9: :laughing9:

I used to use it to polish silver dimes with when I was a kid. Just keep rubbing it on the coin with your bare hands. :tongue3: :tongue3: :tongue3:No problems!

When I was a kid we moved into the house that's still in my family. The guy who lived there collected nearly everything. In the
garage I found a bottle of mercury that had to weigh at least 15 or 20 pounds. We played with that stuff for years, pouring some
out, spreading it around & pushing it back into a puddle & putting it back in the jar. Never bothered me, I'm completely normal. :icon_cyclops_ani:
