Went to check an area where I previously have found some 17 century Native American artefacts. Found this unusual little thing that I at first have mistaken for a rusted chunk of iron. Thankfully recognized the familiar shape. I believe it's a Fur Trade period belt axe. Pretty happy with this find and really glad I have kept it, hopefully it will clean up well.

Thanks for the comments.

Note:One thing I forgot to mention in my original post is the fact that there was a square nail driven into the handle where it connects to the axe head(on top of it). The nail was still in it's place when I found it. I have never seen anything similar but I presume that the nail was to prevent the handle from breaking on impact considering how small and thin was the wooden part. The axe head is less than 4'' long.

Here's a comparison to my previous Trade Axe.

Oh man I am green with envy right now bud. That's an excellent trade axe. Quite small, perhaps used to slay chipmunks. Lol

Very very cool find Aureus!

OMG it's a pocket knife version of an ax.

cute, for a kid?

Yes, that's definitely a belt/bag axe, great find!

Sweet little axe! As someone who loves iron, I'd flip out to dig one like that. It'll look awesome after electrolysis... Looks pretty solid.

found a very similar tomahawk (5" long X 2" blade) in Ulster County NY last year down 20" in yard of a 1723 home. sold it for $66. I be sharin' the JOY of yers & relivin' the glorious moment when mine was released to butcher chipmunks again (THANKS FOR THAT ONE, scrappy :icon_thumleft::notworthy::icon_thumright:

Great little axe you found, I still wonder if the small ones were for kids or the women.
I really have this one axe that I'd say was a possible trade axe and it measures under 6" if I remember right.
It's one of those moments that when I dug mine the memory still is fresh years later.

That's a sweet find.
Don't see many small trade axes like that one.
Congrats

They were small, so you would only chop off your finger, and not your whole hand ! Great find.
