Pretty warm day really, which meant the mud was as sticky as every. We did our normal gridding exercise for 5 hours. Little did we know that this previously dead area would turn up some of our best finds so far. Last time Cru'dad battered me with all the best finds, this time the XP hit back getting all the notable finds leaving Cru'dad with the cartwheel, hook & some buttons.:laughing7:
2 sceats in a day is a rare thing & to put it into context we have had 2 previous years with zero sceats. This year is now our record year at 6!

4 Roman Coins (1 holed in the Saxon period)
Livery Button & early Military? (not sure?)
Lead Token
Medieval Buckle
Supporting Arm Saxon Brooch 5th C (Nice example) Read more about how rare they are being a Germanic migration piece;

Amazing finds man. Love those silver coins!

You guys are killing it close to years end! Three Sceats in one week makes it a good score for the whole year.
Well done on the brooch. Now i know where our Saxon brooches are... :icon_thumright:

Wow! You are pumping out the good stuff at that site!
I hope those Sceats turn out to be the "real" type, so that you have the complete collection of "normal" coins and contemporary counterfeit.
Always love to see medieval silver, my favourite type of silver :D
Awesome brooch, too!

Although the left sceat seems a little debased they both look right to me.:occasion14:

Congratualtions on another fantastic hunt! :occasion14:

Great day out on the field you had, and huge congrats on the silvers.
Query: Getting three SCEATS off the same track be a potential hoard?

We get all googly-eyed over a 18th century buckle...you guys gotta get all...medieval on us! Love seeing that really old stuff coming out of the ground after hiding so long..great saves..Ddf

Two sceats in one trip is amazing. A real sceat feat that is hard to beat. :laughing9:

Wow ! A happy Christmas for the Cru is in the bag ! Cheers !! Thank you so much for the amazing finds all year !

Yes, if they were in close proximity, but they are plotted (GPSed) across a large area, maybe about 80-100 metres away from each other. Until yesterday we were not sure if this 5th-6th C Site spanned into the 8th C, with this evidence the site either side of a Roman track-way must have been there a lot longer than expected.

I like that, & I'll shorten that rhyme to 'sceat feat hard to beat'. Although it only works in modern English as they pronounced it in Anglo-saxon 'shat'.

Update with IDs;

''The coin on the left is Series R1, an East Anglian issue from early in the period c.710-750.
The coin on the right is Series G4, a Frisian coinage from the Primary Phase, c. 690s-715/20.''

I've fleshed out the IDs at the top (first post).

Excellent finds Cru. Two in a day is incredible!

I always love seeing your finds!

OK you just making us Yanks look bad now! :notworthy: congrats on some great finds..

Thanks to all that commented. We have about 1 day left to finish the site, a previous blank area, will it remain blank??

2017 year of the sceats.
Awesome

I can identify coins and buttons fairly well. ALL those other ancient bits and pieces you recover just blow my little mind! It must take a PHD in research to figure out just what the heck it is you dig on any given day! I am just actually learning about the variety of square nails that are out there! LOL! Nine years into this treasure hunting thing and I am still such a NOOB! Thanks for your assistance in providing information to so many about the cool old stuff we recover. Much appreciated mate!:hello:

I could never see myself getting a PHD, I'm not an academic & its made harder by my mild dyslexia which not only affects my writing but my ability to read books. However, what aspergers has given me is a passion for objects (& repetitive tasks) with an eidetic memory. So the only books I own are reference books with minimal reading & maximum pictures. I can recall in the field a small piece of an object I saw in a book 10 years ago, with little thought, just total recall. It's a gift of my condition, I'm just lucky I found detecting at an early age, as I'm pre-disposed to habitual activities which could easily go in the wrong direction. Everyday I have to keep my beer drinking in check & detecting helps that.:thumbsup:
Merry Xmas.
