I believe that if the whale rock was found at a latter date , we would be talking about the Goldfish -Cracker Rock...
About 27 yr.’s ago , during a morning break a co-worker told me about this rock that his grandson had found during a family outing the past weekend . The grandson had been playing down in the creek when he found this rock that, to him looked like a whale . The co-worker tried to explain what the whale -rock looked like , he even drew it in the dirt , we both were looking at his drawing , well I guess it does look like whale , but he assured me it had to be a Indian rock...of some kind, and that I needed to see it . I’m sure that I made it over to his house that week to have a look . When I saw the whale rock for the first time , I thought AXE! And it’s not from around here!! As I looked this artifact over , I thought , O.K. a uni-groove axe never herd of one , but this double bit end
? I told my co-worker and his wife that I believe the whale rock might be a axe, but not from the “local-Indian culture” , but possibly a little war-club type from one of there “visitors”. I also told them that it’s vary well made , and in vary good condition, and that it’s probably a vary, vary rare piece. I also told them that I’d do some research . I was going to night school at a local community collage so I’d pop in the library now and then , did a bit of research with books made of paper, real old school stuff!! I even went to the school “arche” , I’ve done this a few times , but I always felt a bit dirty doing so .
The best that I could ever come up with , was the slave -killer axes from the Pacific North-west . Now for you that aren’t familiar with these axes , usually described as Effigy Slave-killer Axes . They have two to three bits / blades , they are a monolithic type axe [handle and bit/blade is one piece of stone] and are about 20in. Long . Believed to have been ceremonial or a totemic symbol , not a true fighting/working axe . Anyway the only similarity that could link these axes together is the unusual double bit .
Now I don’t know if the people who made these slave-killer axes actually took slaves , let alone kill them . I have read accounts of slavery in the Pacific N.W. , and I must assume there was fighting between some of the tribes. Now that I’m starting “assuming” things , I believe that if the people who made the slave-killer axes were going to take a hand-weapon to a fight , that a nut-cracker like the whale rock on a 20 in. Stick would be a good candidate ! Now I have two scenarios that would put the whale rock at the location where it found . The first would have been to “controversial” , written as a fictional story line , it would have shown a possible view of a native -culture as vicious as any European culture could be , politically incorrect I know. One other problem , is well, where many networks and the media can expect the general public to leap over any cavern of fact , as long as they are being led by them , this “jump” can’t be made on this forum . A real shame, as I believe this was some of my finest “creative writing” ... so far.
Now my second scenario, I like, it gets more believable the older I get , even I didn’t see how ironically-funny it was until I started writing this post . Anyway I’ll take a step back to describe the location where the whale rock was found . The area may be best described as a small inland valley ,lets say +/- 100 yd. across the shaded oak covered bottom land , walled by low rolling hills . There is a small creek that has a few bed-rock pools , on some of the bed rock you may find some grinding-stone holes , a testament to a earlier occupation . O’yeah there is this one important feature that makes my second scenario work , it’s this 100+ yr. Old school house in the general area . Anyway in this scenario a grandson takes a / some of Grandpa’s indian rocks [from the Pacific N.W.]to school for show and tell . Well, that shady creek is a tempting detour before going home to do chores and home-work , I believe Grandpa’s indian rock just never made it home again.. ..
