You remember my big detector....
http://forum.treasurenet.com/index.php/topic,87725.0.html

I've now got about 25 acres opened up. When they cut the hay, its about 3" tall so my detector goes thru it easily. Now I can see how well its going to do as a relic finder. This field used to be plowed for crops. Its about 1/4 mile from my house and there never was a house there (that I know of). I'm mainly finding stuff that fell off the machinery. The wrench in the forground was the deepest thing at about 9". Most of it was just below the surface to 6". The guys that farm my land got a kick out of the old junk I find. They said that in the olden days, people didn't plow as deep as they do now. About 4 or 5". The smallest thing I found is part of a bolt at about 3". Its 5/16" and about 3"long. I got a good signal on it. That gives me a good idea how small a target I can see.

I can really cover some ground with this thing. A brisk walk isn't too fast. I throw down a white plastic bottle cap and come back later to pinpoint and dig.

They baled the hay today so I lost my nice rows. Oh well. After they remove the bales, I'll put flags out to mark the targets.

Its been to dang hot/humid to be out there during the day. We've had weather like Georgia . I tried to go out at night but the skeeters are big, hungry, and can find the spots you miss with the DEET.

Rob, that device of yours would be great for some Civil War era fields!

Nice post.

Thats great you have to bring it down to the Chisholm hunt. I really enjoyed trying it out when I was up there. A neat way to hunt. How much of the field was covered for those finds? How much time did you spend hunting? Was the ground very smooth or rough? Dang I wish you were not so far. Did you see the shotgun? We are going to buy a gold coin.
Congrats on your finds they are neat.

Looks like it works pretty good. I like it!

Will it find small stuff ? Or is only good for looking for big things like meteorites ?

Looks like you're onto something there with your design. So what do you call it, c'mon you can tell us ;D

Hi Burdie,
I saw that shotgun, pretty cool. How old is it? Is it from the same field?

I covered quite a bit of ground, but only a small portion of the field. The ground is mostly smooth so it pushes nicely.

I've been having to do some chores. Wheat harvest is starting and I had to cut a bunch of trees out of the ditches so the combine can get down the road. Its way too hot to be running a chain saw!

I figure the law of averages will catch up to me.....if I dig enough crap, I'm BOUND to find something cool.

The detector is a Hammerhead by Carl on the Geotech forum. I originally got into this to find a meteorite. When I got my kid a detector when he was 12, we went out there thinking "there won't be any iron trash way out here". Little did I know that iron is EVERYWHERE.

The smallest thing I have found so far is a bolt 5/16 by 2 1/2 long. It gave a pretty good signal, one that I couldn't mistake for noise.

Hey Burdie,
Here is how much of the field I covered ( the white part ). Way less than 10%. It was cropland way back when. About 6 years ago, we put it back to hay. Its too sloped for crops. Its amazing how much iron is out there.

I found a small piece of terra cotta while digging a target. It looks like part of a flower pot. Too small to tell. A strange thing to find in the middle of a field. No other non-metallic trash.

I wish you lived closer. Its cloudy and cooler today. Got my chores done. Ready to hunt

I remember reading your post about the detector. I don't understand how you can tell where in that large square the signal is coming from...ie. you had shown numerous items under the ground...did you only figure out where they were in relation to each other after you pinpointed? I like the idea for covering large amounts of land quickly.
Hope you find some cool stuff.

Hey. Bring that over around the end of October and I'll let you search my fields.

Provided you run my hand cranked seed scatterbox or I can tie the push-drop cart to your belt for the winter wheat as you go. :D

I can't !! I have my kid come behind me with our old Garrett and pinpoint to a foot diameter circle. Thats one of the reasons I'm excited to try in this field. In the yard and around the buildings, there is sooo much trash that I get multiple targets.

I'll put a GPS on it and let YOU pull it around with your tractor :)

How good is it at pinpointing?

Whats the smallest thing it can find?

lol that is an awesome detector!! even got the kid in on it!! im lucky my dad never thought of that... he'd had me on a bicycle pulling that round every feild in texas, while he did all the digging and getting goodies!

I really enjoyed this post. Keep us posted on your finds.
