They cut the corn..........

Well today was supposed to be a rain out weather wise, but they cut the corn, it was my only opportunity since the cut, I really wished hard for a good day and got it. I had folks rooting for me, I may have let them down.............but I had a BALL!

I show up to a bunch of turkeys in my site. With all the corn they left behind after the cut who could blame them? Looks like a good year for the hunters, got some girth going on here.

Get moving......an old buck shows up as I'm 10 feet from my car. "Find any arrow heads down here?" I love that question when I have my detector swinging! He is picking up corn for bird feed for his Mom, how sweet. What a chatter box! He was totally fascinated with the whole aspect. Next thing I know he is bringing me bottle tops, broken pottery, yelling "your there, your there!" Every time the detector beeped he wanted to know what I found. What motivation to find something great (not). I really wanted to find him an arrow head (not) but we talked about the shards I found and how they were made. He had as much fun as I did. I bet I see him again! To see some one get so excited over my blueish pottery thingy? Lead pipe..........you should have seen the look on his face when I found the barn door hinge?

The finds are pretty much self explanatory (junk ). The buckle looking thingy I doubt is a buckle, too big? Hey how much is lead bringing nowadays? I got a bunch of it! I do like the large hinge thingy, I only ended up with 2 nails, 3 if you count the one in the hinge .

I got to get out to a great site, and will be going back on Wed. if the rain (again) holds out . I'll get a good one before the year is out, just wait and see!

The pictures were good, the rain held off, I made a new friend, my knees hurt , above all else I had fun!

P.S. I know why salamanders are orange...........so you don't step on the little buggers!

Kim, from what I see from what you picked up, there for sure is some good possibilities in that field, besides Thanksgiving dinner

I like the Red Eft, they are not common in the pinebarrens of South Jersey, but I used to catch lots of them as a kid growing up in Pennsylvania.

Hopefully, Wednesday will be THE DAY.

Don, We have found some old stuff there, operative word WE. I found some keepers. Funny, I always leave there with a keeper, picture, friend or treasure. Old faithfull never left the trunk (poor thing ) I really like the Whites. Down in the fields rings a nickle....lead pipe, reads penny...............farm equipment..........aluminum rings high.............beer cans make an odd noise...............Wed. it is! Gotta wish the rain away!

We call the little orange (thankfully! ) guy salamander around here, I'll have to look him up.

is part of a drive chain for an antique threshing machine or possibly an
old corn cutting machine. Fun stuff!!

Country girl.. first of all.. congradulations on your patience. <grin> Don't you just love having someone follow you around while you are trying to relax and enjoy your hobby time? Imagine the same thing with oh.. say.. six or seven pre teen kids.. "Hey Mister! Hey Mister! What are doing?" "Have you found any gold?" "can that thing find dollar bills?" <rolling eyes> I would think that an older adult would have more restraint, but apparently not in your case. <grin> Bless your patience.
As for your "buckle" thingy.. it's not a buckle dear one. From past experience and first hand familiarity I know that your buckle is actually part of a chain. A well rusted and fused chain to be sure, but a chain none the less. You would find them on some early farm equipment like say a horse drawn buckboard type wagon/manure spreader. That type of chain was also used in applications like "water cranks" where there were smallish square or rectangular "buckets" attached to the chain. The chain went around a hand cranked "sprocket" with a spout.. and back down into a well or a cystern. When you turned the crank, the chain would pull full buckets of water up and the buckets would tip and water would come out the spout.. and continue back down to the water to be refilled.
Anyway, that's what I suspect your buckle to be.. a piece of a similar chain. Unless there is a nearby well or cystern (on an old farm?) I would put my money on the manure spreader application though, those hand forged square chains were notorious for breaking. However, a good hand with a hammer and a good pair of pliers could remove a broken link and reconnect the chain..in the field.. and keep right on working.
I wouldn't be surprised if you didn't find more links like that in your corn field in the future.. provided that you aren't leading around a curious Looky Loo! looking for arrowheads with your METAL detector.. <laughing>

Frodov I really didn't mind him tagging along for a bit, he was very nice. To have someone that curious about the hobby, to want to listen and learn, who was there to pick p corn but started picking up treasures instead? Maybe he'll get a detector?

Joe, Keep dancing for me! Dang I was going to hold the little fella for you, but the picture is on my other memory card out in the trail camera. I haven't seen one in a while, we used to catch them as kids all the time.

Leslie, No turkeys? They aren't doing any damage, they are just picking up the droppings fattening up for the hunters . They are very good eating. Allot of folks use the feathers for tieing flies for fishing.
