Detector(s) used
ACE 250; Lone Star
Primary Interest:
All Treasure Hunting
I am a newby and received a Lone Star Bounty Hunter for Christmas. I have only been in and around our local parks and have located a bit of clad (a whopping $3.22). I am already thinking about upgrading to a new detector. I have heard the Garrett detectors do extremely well. So here is my quandry: A) Which Garrett is best for me? B) Do I go the extra mile and spend $$$? Do I go whole hog and go for the 2500 or settle for a 1500 or 1350? I would like to search for coins and jewelry at the sametime. On the Bounty Hunter, I see to have to choose between "modes." Is there a detector out there that will do both at the same time? Perhaps I just need more practice. ???

The Ace 250. or the Fisher f-2 are both very good detectors that will both find jewelry and coins, and won't cost you a months wages. Then check into Minelab, Whites and so on, when you are ready to upgrade. The fisher and Garrett mentioned will tell tou what it is and how deep with pretty good accuracy.

you will have to change to a differant mode each time for those garrett machines
that you listed

Don't get hung up on the different modes. All they do is notch out different things. If you hunt in jewelry mode it will still pick up coins. I personally don't think an F2 or Ace 250 are much of an upgrade performance wise. If you plan on mainly hunting parks, stick with the Lone Star and maybe pick up a Tesoro Compadre. It doesn't have a TID screen, but with it's smaller coiler, it is easier to work in trashy areas and closer to playground equipment. It also operates at a higher frequency more sensitive to gold jewelry.

With metal detecting, you will find what equipment you need is dictated by what type of hunting you are doing. No one detector is best for every situation.

Apush,

GibH is exactly right, you just need practice, and soon you will start finding the good stuff. Hang in there, and good luck.

I have been a dealer for quite some time now, with fisher, Garrett, Tesoro, and Bounty hunter. The ace 250 can give amazing results...Just ask CRACKBADGER. The Fisher F-2 Is the 250's competition, but with newer programing and 1/2 the weight. The Compadre is a very good machine with excellent discrimination, but you don't really know what you are digging.

I have a Land Star, and my Ace 250 blows it away..........I can't say anything bad about the unit......In a head to head with my friends 1350, the Ace is up there with it, but not as many bells, and whistles......Just my 2 cents...Tom

The Ace 250 is a great start up machine. I had one and sold it to a friend of mine and he has made some good finds with it.I bought it as a back up and only used it a couple of times .I was impressed with all the bells and whistles it had for the money.

Here is what you do buy an ace 250 use it then if you are unhappy with it sell it you will get your money back. On this forum the 250 has held it's reputation very well I am a newbie with my 250 I have yet to find greatness only here and there some clad. Guess what These areas have been picked through sure there are virgin lots out there What I can see is the guys that come home with the loot are the hardest workers you will ever meet. Sometimes you hear of a guy that buys a detector and finds enough to pay for it the very first day. It can happen but this is the hobby that will work you. Some people are the computer they can tell you everything about a coin before they dig it with a cheapo detector simply because they used their machine enough to where they were the computer.

I was surprised to learn that you can use the 250 on wet sand just lower the sensitivity. I plan to take it to a beach soon to see if that is the cats meow. I really need a beach digger to do that . I am tempted to take a shovel and go for it just to see if it is worth my time.
What I am trying to say is it isn't always the detector sure if you want to pay for the ultimate you can but you will hear from many coin shooters that most of the coins are 2 to 3 inches and that has been my experience. The only way I really want all that depth is if I am in an area where the digging is easy not where I have to use a pick. The guys that locate the silver you will see from the videos in my favorites on youtube are the ones that are willing to dig they will dig birthday cakes not plugs and they will get the silver over 300 coins a year.

This is why I want to use my 250 on a beach before I upgrade or downgrade to another detector if the 250 can do it all I will stick with and learn it well..

There is not much I have not found with my Ace, about the only bad thing, I can say for it is it does not like saltwater.I have found tons of silver (well maybe not tons lol)...Clad, watches, you name it...for being as cheap as it is, it is one of the best little detectors around...with my sniper coil, I can go places where you would not believe...Right up against metal fences......It is so light with that coil, i can swing all day..........I keep saying im going to upgrade, but just cant see spending the money unless, i can really get a deal on something WAY better........
