I cannot stress to anyone the importance of trying to find an experienced meta detector to help you. I'm pretty new to the hobby and have been finding something here and there. Today I got to go out with tnet member Jasper ( pat) to a few spots and he showed me a few tricks my ace250 does that I didn't do. At a school playground I found about $2.00 in clad, a couple silver earrings, a few washers, a small silver charm, a 2 inch medallion that's given to kids for field day, and a few other little buttons also a mountain of foul and pull tabs which I removed. Not a whole lot of great finds but....I had a flipping blast!!! I was getting a bit discouraged but thanks to Jasper I'm full of excitement and ready to go out again.

New users and members......learn your machine....read, watch, listen to everything you can about it. And if at all possible find someone who knows what they are doing to hang out with. If nothing more than companionship you can learn a lot from experience. I know I did today!

Thanks Jasper for all your help!!!!

Kenny, you're right on. Detecting with someone experienced will bring one up to speed much faster than fumbling around on their own. Following the questions on the forums helps alot as well. Especially after you get knowledgeable enough to recognize what's being offered.

Another great tip for newbie's is slooooooooow Your swing down and listen. When you do, you get a better idea of what your detector is telling you. Now while all this is good stuff, you also need to dig a lot of targets while first learning so you can relate what your hearing to what's in the ground and know next time you hear a similar sound it's trash or treasure. Depending on your detector you may not only have to relate what you hear, but also what you see ( VDI#) with our diggings. I've had to learn most of this from trial and error as I haven't had the advantage of a experienced fellow member close by, but we all have thousands at the touch of our finger tips right here.

Thanks for the post, I am very new to the hobby as well & agree that experience speaks volumes. I don't know anyone in my area that detects, however I found & joined this forum for the very same reason lol. I hope to gain from others experiences & knowledge here enough to adequately get my detector set properly. Once set I can then begin & pay my dues. At the moment I have only some change, nails, & aluminum to call finds. With any luck I can get some valuable advice here & can't wait to start posting finds!
