I found this piece at one of my older house sites and initially thought it to be a shotgun shell, considering its shape and size. I’m now starting to believe otherwise, since it has that small extruded piece on the base of it and teeth on the border of the base. It has a small extruded ring in the center of the base. The edges of the bottom also appear to have an ornate pattern. Not sure what this is. Any ideas?

Nathan, your find looks more likely to be part of a clockwork mechanism, I find a lot of these on old home sites.

It's a spring hub. Probably from an old night stand/ alarm clock.

All these are pretty good ideas. I think y’all are right about the clock part. I’ve found so many clock pieces in the same area that it would only make since for this to go to something similar. Thanks again for the ideas!

At that size, it's a mainspring barrel for a dollar pocket watch.
