Thoughts on the XP ORX

Hello T-Net. I've been a long time Ace 400 user, which has always been a great machine for me, but I decided it was time for an upgrade. After shopping around I've decided on the XP ORX. Price, features, and simplicity are what drew me to it. Wanted to get opinions on this machine as well as any tips that users have. Hoping to make lots of cool discoveries with this new machine that I can post here. Thanks in advance for any input.

Are you looking at a low-priced used one? Metal detector technology has advanced since this one came out. It’s a trimmed-down version of the XP Deus and you never hear anything about the Deus now. It’s still a pretty good detector but many other models have surpassed its performance. The ORX is super lightweight as is the Deus. This can be a real advantage if you have any physical problems. I see XP is coming out with a new lower-priced detector. I think you would be better off to spend a little more and get something like that, but you can still find good stuff with the ORX.

Hey I appreciate the input! No on the health problems, thank goodness. I got a new ORX but on discount with the new XP icon coming out and an additional promo where I got the wireless headphones added in at no extra cost. I looked at the Icon but it did not particularly draw me in. I guess I'm kind an anomaly in that I'm young but averse to the newest tech. I drive a car that has crank windows if that says anything lol.

I realize the ORX is a few years old by now, but there's a couple things I really liked about it. To expand on my initial post, I was looking for a sub-600 dollar detector with some upgraded features from my Ace. I really like where it sits at the crossroads of features without over complication. I can adjust necessary functions ( recovery speed, frequency, etc) without so many features as to feel overcomplicated. It also seems to be really fast in trashy sites. I do see the lack of multifrequency as a disadvantage, but at the price point of the ORX, I felt okay not having it.

My suggestion is to get a gold ring and put it out in your yard and practice listening to the sound it makes compared to a pull tab. And if you don’t have a gold ring use a nickel. Practice often and one day you will start to recognize the sound. Clad coins are okay I guess but you want gold. Start at the edge of trashy areas where it starts to thin out. Otherwise you can get ear fatigue.

ORX is a good detector. The ICON and ICONX are Fast Multi Frequency, the ORX is simply single frequency. However, since you already bought the ORX, did you buy it with the High Frequency coil? If not, you'll definitely want to get one.

Thanks, that is great advice. I plan to take it out in the yard with a bunch of common targets and see what numbers ring up.

I did not get the HF coil, but I'd like to get one at some point. I mostly relic hunt but may try some prospecting with it, which the HF would be invaluable for.

The HF is also GREAT for relic hunting!

The gold program is the same as the Deus. It is very powerful. Find a low trash area and spend some time learning it. Don’t use too much iron rejection IAR. Listen for the zip-zip sound of a good target.

Oooh, thanks so much. That will be really helpful. I'm thinking I'll test it with some pieces of birdshot - something similar to a tiny piece of gold.

When I go out I take some time to work the gold field program just for practice. Tot lots are a good place to start. Using the 9” X-35 coil on the Deus 1 I’ve found targets smaller than birdshot! My pinpointer couldn’t even see them. You will also find the salt in your hand gives a signal. So a plastic scoop can be handy for separating the tiny targets.

You can use the gold program for finding coins and jewelry. Use maybe 3 IAR to eliminate some trash. Look for deep targets. Target zoom can maybe help. I used to try to spend one hour working it. It is the deepest program. Of course it has to be an old area but you might find some good stuff. Stay away from the high trash areas. Yes, it takes some practice. The tot lots are easier digging at first. Stay away from filled-in areas that can have a bunch of deep cam slaw. I don’t know if there is a book on the ORX . I’m not sure how useful the Deus book would be. Check YouTube for ORX videos
