Threaded cap

found this today metal detecting next to some tracks where an old railroad station was in mid 1800's to the mid 1900's. not sure what it is. its hexagon shaped with some sort of symbol on it and threads inside. anyone know age or what it came from? I can't find anything about it in my research.
