After work hit a soccer field for a couple hours. It actually could have been a good time but the holes dug by the person before me were just terrible. The ground was so dry and this time looking for shallow clad its easier to use a probe or screwdriver. Whoever dug these didn't know how to pinpoint for one and when it wasn't a coil the trash was just dropped on the ground, so alot of my fun was gone. I ended the hunt with 46 coins and a total of $3.35. So I come home and had to weed the garden, mow the lawn and trim and I still had time to hit the park 5 minutes from my house. First signal and it was a very crappy signal was the 1920 Merc all of three inches deep, then hit two wheats, then suddenly the 1923 Merc. The 23 Merc was such a clear loud signal. I hunted a little longer hitting three more wheats and the bugs and heat had finally gotten to me. On the way back to the car I get this loud dime signal and almost didn't dig it and maybe, just maybe an inch deep was my first Seated Dime of the year(1876-CC). I was shocked for two reasons, first was the fact I had hunted this area many times over the last two years and these shallow coins surprised me, second was how clear two of the silver coins were. I've not hunted the old stuff much but might just have to spend a little more time there. The first hunt I had used the Ace 250 and the second hunt I used the Minelab Explorer 2.

Those are some fine silver coins! And so shallow too, wow! I should be so lucky. I'm not digging too much in the grass cuz its to dry...like digging in rock. I'm with you, the only ones I've taken from the grass lately have been with the probe and screwdriver. Again, great coins.

How sweeeeet!

Everybody loves Seated Coinage. Great finds!

Very nice, hope the finds keep coming in that park.

Jack, that is just awesome!!! A seated dime at 1 inch??? And it looks in great shape too!!! Man, I'd get right back over there and dig every coin signal in the ground.

Heck, mercs and rosies here in S. CA are on the average 7" deep. Just not fair... :(
Still looking for my first seated of the year.

Congrats,

Hey Captn, wish every Seated I dug was one inch deep. Most I dig hit in the 7-10 inch range, but have no problem digging a shallow one now and again!

Nice finish! That Seated dime is sweet.

Great finds.

Very nice, congrats!! I am still looking for my first seated. Heck, I am still looking for my first pre 1900 coin. That first crappy signal could have been the coin at a steep angle or even on edge. I have found silver with signals like that where the tone was not good but I dug it anyway and found the coin in the wall of my hole and it was on edge.

Great finds Jack... That seated dime is in great shape :P ... If you don't mind, kindly post some more pics with her all cleaned up (front and back... purdy please)...

Hello Jack!
Nice story! Isn't it strange how the silver comes in 3s? I've had it happen to me several times over the past several weeks. Then, all the sudden finding silver dries up again. You had a good day; spotting ten or more nickels you certainly are doing something right, working diligently.

Regarding the holes the previous detectorist left; I've been known to keep a 5 gallon bucket of sand in my truck for exactly those occasions. Whether you choose to believe it or not, you would be blamed for them if someone else happened along and saw you detecting. It's better to play safe I suppose. I'm hoping you picked up their trash also. :)

I picked up their trash since they for some unknown reason could not. In the last couple years I have seen many places that were like this. Many newer people trying out don't understand what can happen to all of us because of the damage done and trash left behind. Many good detectorists get blamed for this as well. As for those who have detected for a long time and leave these holes there is NO excuse. Find a new guy set him straight so he can enjoy this hobby for years to come. What do you do when its someone who has detected for years and just could care less??? It just ruins the day when I see this kind of stuff because I know it numbers the spots we will be allowed to hunt!

Thats a sharp seated !

Keep @ it and HH!!
