Went to a school in the Thumb with 2 detecting buddies this past Wednesday, 2 days a go. We go somewhere different every Wednesday. The school is from the Late 50's or early 60's, but there could have been a school there before that. Not sure. There is also an older school (from prob the 30's) that shares some of the ground with the newer school.
Anyway, we were there for about 6 hours. I was frustrated as heck with my SE for the first two hours and had only managed 6 coins...pathetic. I was just concentrating on trying to find deep coins and prob had my sensitivity way too high. The guys I hunt with both have Explorers, one has the XS, the other has the II. They are always kicking my butt. They hunt with sensitivity between 10-16 most of the time. I decided to give it a try. I hunt on semi-auto 12 for the last 4 hours. I also told myself to "DIG COINS"...stop waiting for iffy signals and passing up shallow goodies.
Anyway, in the first 2 hours I had 6 coins, which were 4 pennies, a quarter, and a dime.
In the next 4 hours, after changing my settings, I dug 66 coins. I ended up with 72 coins total...
19 Pennies, 11 Nickels, 28 Dimes, & 10 quarters that were all clad.
I got 4 good finds.
1917 Wheat Penny
1917 Canadian Large Cent (prob at least the size of a quarter)
1944S Mercury Dime (On edge at 4-5 inches)
1946 Wheat Penny (Down about 6-7 inches)
So the day didn't turn out so bad.
However, the gent with the XS dug 6 wheats, 2 mercs, a rosie, and 2 silver rings. The gent with the XS dug 5 wheat, a rosie, a silver ring, and 32 quarters.
So I still got my butt kicked, but I ended up with a few goodies. Hopefully these new settings will bring me a bit better luck.
BTW...I now have 5 silver coins on the year and they are all Mercury Dimes. Also have 40 wheats on the year. Not great, but I'm learning this machine so time will tell.
