After seeing the last post on BENCHMARKS, the photo reminded me of an old hunt I did when I was a kid.......railroad tie date nails.
These were nails were driven into railroad ties when they were replaced. I don't know if this practice is still used ( I dought it). I have nails dating 09, 19, and 21. (1909, 1919 & 1921).
I'm sure if you go down some old railroad beds you can still find these.
I will post photo's when I find them. (just moved and still unpacking).
