Dug the garden bed for this summer with a rototiller. Virgin ground on a hill beside the house. After I tilled the kids and me dug with out hands in the fresh dirt and found lots of stuff. Two horse shoes, plenty of porcelain and glass, some pottery shards.
Found some modern change nothing special. We also found a worn out 1903 V nickel. One steel penny, a big 1881 dollar and a Buffalo nickel.(daughter found those) I am soaking the coins in oil now, pictures to come. They are very black, is that normal? One penny is green the other one is crusty and black, the steel one looks really good. The Buffalo nickel looks almost brown. Why the variation is appearances? I figured they would all look the same.

I REALLY need a detector.

I love this.
My daughter had a blast digging and pulling out things and the three year old boy got to play in a big dirt pile so he was giddy. It isn't easy digging like this. Coins are hard to spot in the soil by hand.

Whatever the wife wants. Cucumbers, peppers, tomatos, lettuce, carrots, onions, potatos, whatever.

As long as I got Cukes and orange peppers I'm happy.

How to I get rid of the black on these coins?

Still look like crap.
How do I get the black off?

WOW You REALLY need a detector, just think what you may find withthat !

sitting on a silver qnd gold mine I think

There were 11 kids living here at one time so I imagine all sorts of buried trinkets and coins. If anything to keep the siblings from getting them.

After these are cleaned they'll go into the house stuff collection with the photos and stuff.

If you must--------a liquid silver polish applied sparingly let set wash off repeat--want to do it fast rub with the polish and soft cloth (shudder) then wash with liquid soap and water. Steel penny----forget it!! The nickel? any thing I have used just made it look worse so I just leave those anymore. Actually I don't cean my coins not the good ones anyway just soap and water and a soft toothbrush!!

OK just thought of something I did as a kid (60 years ago) and tried it on a 1972 nickel. Take a pencil and use the eraser it will take the black off without pitting the coin.

And---- yes beg, borrow or buy but get a detector!!!!!!!!!!!

I agree get a detector. If you cant afford one try to rent one. A local tool rental place by me actually rents metal detectors. Cant hurt to ask.

Well I don't want to mess them up. I see a lot of silver coins here that are silver, mine are black so I guessed the rest were cleaned somehow.
I can make a screen.
Thanks everyone, I am happy about the responses! I figured I didn't find anything anything major.

Next is the buggy house out back. Probably lots of junk but that was where the families transportation was parked for several decades from horse buggies in the 00s all the way to the 70s. Bound to be some change out there.

I found the first buffalo nickel in the backyard a few months ago and didn't think much of it.

Brother you have a spot lots of us dream about, may (Possible but rare) be a coin there that could pay off your home. If I lived close I would loan you my extra as long as I could help.
